Leaky Pipes ???

Broken Pipes and Water Damage

Broken pipes are one of the leading causes of water destruction in homes, and nearly every homeowner will experience a pipe burst or leak at some point.

Every home contains numerous pipes that can burst or break, including sewage pipes and sinks’ pipes, which can be located in the basement, interior or exterior walls, underground or ceilings. Regardless of where the pipe is found, it’s crucial to fix broken pipes quickly to prevent water damage and mildew or mold growth.

Broken or damaged pipes aren’t always obvious. Most pipes burst or leak without warning, and it can be days, weeks or even months before you notice the signs of a damaged pipe. However, once you do spot a leaking or broken pipe, it’s critical to act fast.

A broken pipe that isn’t immediately repaired can become a disastrous problem. Leaking water may damage your property and belongings, and your furniture, appliances, carpets, rugs and even clothes can be ruined in a broken pipe accident. Water seepage that’s left attended can also impact your family’s health, as bacteria and mold flourish in damp environments.

Winter is here !

  • Insulate your home: install storm windows or cover windows with plastic from the inside to provide insulation.
  • Have sufficient heating fuel because regular sources may be cut off. Have emergency heating equipment and fuel.
  • Never run a generator inside a home or garage to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. Always keep running generators in an open and ventilated area. Plug all necessary appliances directly into the generator.
  • To keep pipes from freezing, wrap them in insulation, and allow a small stream of water to run from faucets.
  • To maintain refrigerated and frozen foods during a power outage, open the doors to those appliances as little as possible.
  • Build an “emergency supply kit” (water, food, medications, flashlight, batteries, etc.)
  • Winterize your vehicle and keep the gas tank full (to keep the fuel line from freezing).
  • Keep a car charger for your cell phone in your vehicle.
  • Unplug all other appliances and leave only one light switched on. There is an added risk of power surges occurring that can damage anything plugged in.
  • Trim tree branches in your yard before the storm season begins in your area.

Leaving your home Unattended?

6/2/2020 (Permalink)

Whether your leaving for vacation or in our area a lovely snowbird, there are some steps to follow to help prevent water damage while your home is unattended.

Some of the major causes of water damage are busted pipes, leaky water heaters, freezing pipes, and appliance leaks. So, check the following five things before leaving.

1.Shut off the water supply to the washing machine, toilets, sinks, and ice makers.

  1. In colder climates do not leave your thermostat below 55 degrees.
  2. Check your basement/crawlspace to make sure your sump pump is working correctly, and that you do not have any leaking pipes.
  3. Shut off your gas supply and set your water heater temperature to vacation setting. New water heaters have a temperature dial called “VAC” for vacation setting. This will drop the temperature down to 50 degrees Fahrenheit, which is the most efficient mode to conserve energy while the heater is sitting idle.
  4. Make sure that all your doors and windows have been secured shut to keep put any natural cause like wind and rain.

Even though you have completed the check list water works mysterious ways. If you are leaving for a long period of time, make sure you have someone you trust check on your home for you while your away.

6/2/2020 (Permalink)

Have you come home and smelled something that is not quite right? What do you do? Where do you start?  Here at SERVPRO of Clallam and Jefferson County we are professionally trained with the proper equipment to identify and eliminate these offensive odors. Odors can come from within your home (ducts, walls, crawlspaces etc.) as well as the surrounding areas outside your home. These odors can range from anything from a rodent in the ducting system to mold and mildew in your walls. Maybe you had a small fire and you cannot get that smell out your home by yourself. Many will try and mask these odors or take short cuts in trying to hide them. That simply will not work when your odor problem is serious or persistent. Whether you have a quick question or would like to hire us to provide these services give us a call at our local office at 360-683-0773.

Mold In the PNW

6/2/2020 (Permalink)

Here in the Pacific Northwest mold is prevalent in our outdoor environment everywhere, which sometimes wants to creep into your home and create structural damage. This can sometimes be harmful to your health. SERVPRO of Clallam and Jefferson County is a franchise who can help you with your mold remediation. We work closely with an Environmental Hygienist who has the ability to perform mold testing if the mold smell or concern does not seem to be present visually or is visually present on your materials. They can test to see what your spore counts are and what types of mold are present. The first step is to locate the moisture issue in your home as mold needs moisture and heat to grow. SERVPRO of Clallam and Jefferson County will come in with our moisture meters and infrared camera, upon request, to find where this moisture is coming from. You will then want to fix this issue before the remediation can begin so that no further damage will happen. Once this has been completed you would call our company back out to begin the process. We remove porous materials affected with the visible suspected mold and treat with a hospital grade disinfectant to kill any mold spores that may be left behind. Once the mold remediation has been completed, we can then assess if there needs to be any drying done to any wet materials. We are always available to answer any of your questions regarding mold. Please give us a call at 360-683-0773.

Does Your Clallam or Jefferson Co. Home Have A Mold Problem?

    8/9/2016 (Permalink)

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.
  • If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

If You See Signs of Mold, Call Us Today – 360-683-0773 or 360-379-0205

Did you experience a fire at your home or business?

    8/2/2016 (Permalink)

A backdraft of emotions often sweeps over home or business owners after a fire damage. Fear, uncertainty, stress and doubt about the future of the property can overwhelm the owner long after the flames have been extinguished and the smoke has cleared.

The first 48 hours after a fire damage can make the difference between restoring versus replacing your property and personal belongings.

WHAT YOU CAN DO UNTIL HELP ARRIVES

    • Limit movement in the home to prevent soot particles from spreading and additional damage from occurring.

    • Place clean towels or old linens on rugs and high traffic areas and upholstery.

    • Coat chrome faucets, trim and appliances with petroleum jelly or oil.

    • Place aluminum foil or wood blocks between furniture legs and wet carpet.

    • Do not wash any walls or painted surfaces.

    • Do not shampoo carpet or upholstery.

    • Do not clean any electrical equipment.

    • Do not send clothing to a dry cleaner since improper cleaning may set smoke odor.

So after the first wave of heroes have rescued the property, let SERVPRO of Clallam and Jefferson Co. help you restore it. With the industry-approved training to employ rapid response, the utmost professionalism, cutting-edge technology and open communication, we strive to restore not only the home or business, but the customer’s peace of mind, as well.
